Here at Simply Extend, each week we’ll be covering the different types of options you may have when choosing to extend your home. We’ll be covering loft conversions off on our popular Simply Loft (theLondon loft conversion arm of our company) blog, so keep your eyes posted on this blog for more information specifically on extensions.
This week we’re covering off the popular side return extension! Most suited to period properties, a side return extension involves extending into the pathway at the side of the house. This often means that a kitchen can be enlarged or joined together with a large open space for dining. This is one of the most cost effective methods of extending a downstairs area. We’ve included some images below of side return extensions that we’ve completed for clients in London:

An independent survey conducted by London home extension builders Simply Extend surprisingly revealed that the majority of homeowners are motivated to improve their home by personal enjoyment, rather than the financial incentive of increasing the value of their property.
The study interviewed 626 participants about various home improvement choices and desires, and this survey found that, of those who owned their own home, around 65 per cent said that the most important factor when it comes to making the decision to modify their home would be the personal enjoyment of themselves and their families.
Just under 14 per cent of participants said that increasing the value of their home in order to prompt a sale would be the main reason for them to improve or modify their property.
When asked what was putting them off making improvements to their home, a massive 77 per cent of respondents claimed it was too expensive.
Although many homeowners have been put off making modifications to their home due to financial implications, it does not stop them from thinking about what they’d like to add to their property. If money were no object, the most popular home improvement is a house extension, while just under 30 per cent said the thing they would most like to change about their home is their kitchen.
Robert Wood, Director of Simply Extend, says: “In an age where the focus has always been to add value to a property, it’s pleasing to see that people are prioritising the enjoyment the extra space that having an extension brings.
“Large open plan kitchen and diner extensions are proving popular amongst families, adding space to not only entertain in but also for the children to play in. Extensions needn’t cost the earth; with Simply Extend we work to a fixed cost and a set timescale, ensuring that costs do not soar out of control. We specialise in making the process as simple and as stress free as possible.”
Simply Extend are London’s leading home and kitchen extension company, transforming homes all over London. One of the most frequently asked questions from our clients is whether planning permission is required for their new extension, so here is a quick guide to the basics.
You do not need to apply for planning permission as long as your project falls into the following current criteria:
- The proposed single storey extension should not exceed the rear wall of the original house by more than 8 metres if you have a detached home and 6 metres for other types of homes.
- If you have a double story extension this should not exceed three metres.
